Why we are building Koino

Most Bible stories reached people the same way: someone told them out loud, to a group sitting together. Families heard them at home. Villages heard them at the gate. The early church heard them over a shared meal.

Koino is an attempt to give those stories the same setting again, in the form many teenagers and families already spend their evenings in: a game you play together.

Why the name

Koinos is Greek for "shared by all". It's the root of koinonia, the word the King James Bible translates as "fellowship" in Acts 2:42, where the first believers "continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

That is the promise of every Koino game. You don't watch a story alone on a screen. You live it with the people next to you.

What we are building first

Two games, in this order:

  1. The Mighty Men of David, a party game for 2 to 8 players. You start as one of the outcasts who came to David in the cave of Adullam, and you rise through minigames drawn from the deeds of his mighty men.
  2. Ark: Forty Days, a co-op story for up to four players as Noah and his three sons, from the first plank of gopher wood to the vineyard.

The story is the rule

We try to let the story decide how a game plays. When Shammah holds the lentil field, you lose if you step back. When David pours out the water from Bethlehem, your points turn into honour. When Israel marches around Jericho, anyone who speaks on voice chat makes everyone fail.

What we won't do

We won't show God as a figure. When He acts, you'll see light, cloud, fire or hear a voice. Battles are stylised and bloodless. And we won't pretend to be further along than we are: there is no game art yet, and every placeholder on this site says so.

If that sounds like something your family or youth group would play, join the waitlist. We'll write when the first game is ready.
